No Gold » written by Kaori Yoshikawa

they said that this would be the peak of my life
they said that I would be in my prime
who said?
well, no-one said
but it was implied, it was most definitely implied.

And so we are, constantly dissatisfied
because we thought there would be more to life
so used to being fed on time
confused into chasing paradise

we thought ourselves so deserving
we trained ourselves to expect
we made ourselves a promise
opportunity, a free pass to collect

all the things you worshipped
everything we adored
we were told and repeatedly taught
to want and wish for more

but know it’s not our birthright
to lead a cherished life
and we were not born entitled
to taste sweet paradise

we carry ourselves so precious
and think ourselves so rare
anguished in shallow waters
for we’ve known no real despair

what we carry in our pockets
what you once held in your hands
the things we own are borrowed
attained by favour, luck or chance

so let it go, let go and accept
what we once would’ve paid to forget
we are not due, we have no claim
no gold, no grant, no given gain

and realise

Realise, we were all born blind
and we are all naked out and inside
Realise, we all walk on feet bare
and we are nothing but poor and hungry

poor, bare, hungry and blind
