About Uriel Marín

Uriel Marín was born in Córdoba, Veracruz in southeastern Mexico in 1981, and now lives and works in Oaxaca. While he occasionally works as an illustrator, his focus in on printmaking, particularly silkscreen printing, woodcuts and engraving, through which he produces captivating images that blur the line between traditional and contemporary in both method and expression.

He studied Visual Arts at the University of Veracruz and specialized in printmaking. In 2005 he co-founded two graphic arts collectives in Oaxaca, Mexico. Pata de Perro is dedicated to the production, dissemination and teaching of printmaking. Arte Cocodrilo(now he has seceded) is a collaborative project to promote contemporary Mexican art. Uriel has recently exhibited at 111 Minna Gallery (San Francisco, CA), Multiplied Contemporary Editions Fair ( London, England), Blooom Art Fair (Cologne, Germany), Battersea Park Art Fair, (London, England), Salón Nacional de Gráfica, Museo de la Estampa (Edo. de México), Galería de Arte Contemporáneo (Xalapa, Veracruz), Feria Internacional del Libro (Oaxaca, Mexico) and the University of Houston Clear Lake (Houston, Texas).

Making a cane, or felted rope is a satisfying way to make great felted beads. We will lay down layers of dyed wool and then roll it up and felt it into a fat rope with hot soapy water. The felted rope is then cut into slices to reveal the fabulous cross-section. The finished product can be strung into bracelets or necklaces, used as buttons, or kept in one’s pocket for luck.

LeBrie is a textile artist from Portland, Oregon, USA, and will be the HeadSpace artist in residence in May 2012 at Kayamori House. To find out more about LeBrie’s residency, check this page.

It’s our great pleasure to introducing our next artists in residence, Bill Will & LeBrie Rich (Pen Felt) from Portland, Oregon, USA. Bill and LeBrie will be in residence at our rural headquarters, Kayamori House, during May 2012.

LeBrie (AKA. PenFelt) is an artist with a love of textiles, paper and pattern. Her work has been featured in American and international publications, for print and web. LeBrie regularly teaches felting workshops to adults, and crafty classes to teens in public libraries.

LeBrie: “I am looking forward to immersion in a culture with such a venerable history of aesthetics and hand crafted art forms. I think that Japan will give me context for myself as an artist using traditional craft media in a high-tech world. And I love cute things!!!”

Bill Will is a sculptor and installation artist who has exhibited extensively for more than 25 years. In addition to sculpture and installation art, Bill has also completed more than 30 public art commissions. He is a professor at Oregon College of Art and Craft. Bill lived in Japan for 2 years in the 1970s as an exchange student. In essence, his career as an artist began in Japan, and during his stay he wants to revisit some of the historic installations he remembers, and find out about what contemporary work is going on.

The HeadSpace Artist Residency has been on an extended break to allow us to get other projects off the ground. There have been quite a few changes here at HeadSpace, and we are now ready to open our doors to artists again.

The emphasis of the new residency is for us to provide artists with a place they can feel at home in, relax, eat, explore, and be creative. We will be basing it at Kayamori House, a farmhouse in the mountains of Nara.

Yet again HeadSpace was overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of artists and the quality of work. It was amazing to see such an eclectic collection of artwork and performance ranging from live painting, stand up comedy, dance, graffiti, light installation, to interactive video games. Thanks to Cafe Absinthe, Galaxy Gallery, all the artists, staff, and guests who made such a good vibe at the event!

HeadSpace Arts & Music Festival 2011 The Monster Lineup

Saturday June 4th sees the return of Headspace at Cafe Absinthe. The follow up to last years wildly successful event will be in collaboration with Galaxy Gallery and will show case Headspaces’ artists in residence from the UK, Felt Mistress and Jonathan Edwards who design and create unique monster characters. This year’s MONSTER event promises to be as eclectic and dramatic as the last with live music from 6 bands, dance, performance, photography, live painting and interactive installations. The event will be headlined by Eggore, purveyors of immersive ambient sounds and explosive live physical painting, along with 60 other local and international artists and musicians. HeadSpace is an event not to be missed. Get yourself down to Cafe Absinthe and revel in the creative abundance that Kansai has to offer!

Headspace will be holding a charity art auction with all proceeds going to the Tohoku disaster relief efforts. Bidding will be open for 24 hours starting at the opening of the event. Come join HeadSpace’s latest artists in residence from the UK at Kayamori House for an afternoon of monster making! This workshop is a great chance to meet the headlining artist of the HeadSpace Arts & Music Festival!

Monster kit, drinks and refreshments included
Pick up / drop off at Kintetsu Haibara Station: + ¥500

- If you would like to come early and join us for lunch, please let us know (booking required)
- There is no charge for children wanting to make the kit together with their parents (only ¥500 for refreshments)
- If you cannot participate in the workshop, but would like to buy one of the monster kits, please get in contact.
